There are no flights to Zakopane itself. The town sits under the Tatra Mountains with no airport of its own, so the real decision is which gateway to book: Kraków John Paul II Airport, roughly 88 km north, or Poprad-Tatry in Slovakia, about 20 miles away.

For most travellers from Britain, Kraków is the answer. It has the widest choice of UK departures, and the onward journey south can be done by bus, train or taxi. Poprad-Tatry is closer but serves a much thinner set of routes.

There are no flights to Zakopane: which airport serves it

Zakopane is served by Kraków John Paul II Balice Airport and, on the Slovak side, Poprad-Tatry Airport. Kraków has the deepest UK route network; Poprad-Tatry is physically closer but has far fewer flights.

Search engines also list Košice in Slovakia and Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Both sit far from Zakopane by road and add a border crossing, so they only make sense with a car and a dramatically cheaper fare. Otherwise stick to Kraków.

Kraków John Paul II Airport as the main gateway

Kraków Airport is about 88 km, or 55 miles, north of Zakopane. Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air are the airlines most commonly flying the UK to Kraków route, which means a sensible choice of departure airports and times.

The airport sits at Balice, around 7 miles from central Kraków, so it is not in the middle of town. That matters if you plan a night in the city at either end of the trip.

Poprad-Tatry Airport in Slovakia as the other option close to Zakopane

Poprad-Tatry is the closest airport to Zakopane, about 20 miles away, but it is in Slovakia, not Poland. Wizz Air UK is listed as the airline operating direct flights there from the UK, which means a single-carrier choice rather than a competitive market.

The appeal is a much shorter final leg and a different approach to the Tatras from the south. The drawback is landing in a different country and fewer fallback options if a flight is cancelled.

Airlines flying from the UK to Kraków

Budget carriers dominate the UK to Kraków market, with Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air the names that come up most often. Ryanair's own Poland pages list UK departures including London Stansted, Birmingham and Bristol, with one-way fares advertised from around £14.99 for autumn 2026. Treat those figures as promotional leads rather than what you will pay.

Fares move with season and how far ahead you book. Skyscanner's Zakopane page shows indicative return fares from the UK in the region of £53 to £159 depending on month, based on searches at the time of writing.

How to finish the journey from Kraków Airport to Zakopane

From Kraków Airport you have three realistic ways south: bus, train or taxi. Buses and trains run from the city rather than the terminal forecourt, so the usual pattern is a short hop into Kraków, then the onward service to Zakopane.

If you are weighing up how to split your time between the city and the mountains, our Zakopane itinerary sets out a sensible shape for the trip and where the travel days fit.

How to get from Poprad-Tatry to Zakopane

From Poprad-Tatry the onward leg crosses the Polish border, so allow for that and carry your passport. Services on the Slovak side are thinner than the Kraków corridor and timings vary by season.

The compensation is arriving in the Tatras from the south, which suits a trip focused on the mountains rather than the town. For most first visits, though, the extra complexity is not worth it.

Rough flight times from UK airports to Kraków

Flight times from Britain to Kraków cluster around two and a half hours. Published figures put Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester at roughly 2h 25m to 2h 30m, Bristol at about 2h 30m, and London at around 3h 05m. These are typical block times, not a schedule.

The flight is short enough that the transfer from Kraków to Zakopane will take longer than the air journey. Plan the day around the bus or train, not the plane.

Which month to fly, and what the weather does to prices and crowds

Skyscanner's fare data shows November as the cheapest month for flights towards Zakopane, with August the most expensive. KAYAK flags January as its low season and December as the busiest, based on its own search patterns.

Climate averages tell you what you are buying. August averages roughly 8°C to 24°C, January about -12°C to 2°C, October is the driest month with around six days of rain, and May the wettest with roughly 14. These are typical figures, not a forecast.

Drop bags at your accommodation first, then walk the length of Krupówki to get your bearings and see the Tatras framed at the end of the street. Save the big mountain day for a full day with a clear forecast.

If you only have a short stay, our guide to one day in Zakopane shows how to compress the essentials into a single day. For a two-night trip, a weekend in Zakopane is the better template, with one day in the town and one in the Tatra Mountains.

Which airport should you book?

Book Kraków John Paul II Airport unless a Poprad-Tatry flight perfectly matches your dates and you are comfortable with a cross-border transfer. Kraków gives you more UK departures and a straightforward final leg by bus, train or taxi.

Once the flights are settled, work out how many days in Zakopane you actually have on the ground, because the transfer eats into both ends of a short break. Frequently Asked Questions

Do any airlines fly directly to Zakopane?

No. Zakopane has no airport, so all flights land at a gateway airport and the final leg is by road or rail. The two practical gateways are Kraków John Paul II Airport in Poland and Poprad-Tatry Airport in Slovakia.

Is Poprad-Tatry a better choice than Kraków for Zakopane?

It is closer, at around 20 miles, but it is in Slovakia and has a much thinner set of UK routes. Kraków is roughly 88 km away and has far more departures, which usually outweighs the shorter drive.

How far ahead should I book flights for a Zakopane trip?

Book once your dates are firm and the onward bus or train times work with your arrival. Fares shift with season, so compare a few weeks either side of your preferred dates rather than fixing on one day.
