Direct flights to Katowice leave the UK from two London airports: Stansted with Ryanair and Luton with Wizz Air. Both legs run a little over two hours, which makes Katowice one of the easier Polish city breaks to reach for a short trip. This guide sets out the route options, the typical flight times in each direction, and how your arrival time shapes what you can do on day one.

If you are weighing up whether the city justifies the flight, the answer is a straightforward yes for a two- or three-day break, and the flight choice mostly comes down to which London airport suits you and whether an early arrival is worth paying for.

Which UK airports have direct flights to Katowice

London Stansted and London Luton are the two departure points for direct services to Katowice. Ryanair flies the Stansted route and Wizz Air flies from Luton, with both carriers landing at Katowice Pyrzowice. Heathrow appears in the search listings only as a connecting option, typically via Warsaw, rather than a direct one.

That concentration means travellers outside the south-east usually have a positioning problem to solve before the holiday starts. Coming from Manchester, Bristol or Scotland, you are looking at a domestic hop or a train down to London, or a connection through a hub, and the extra leg often costs more time than the flight itself. Booking the London leg first and building the rest of the journey around it usually works better than the reverse.

Airlines on the route and what each airport means for you

Ryanair from Stansted and Wizz Air from Luton both appear in recent search results with direct departures each way, and their timings and fares are broadly comparable, so the decision is less about the airline and more about which airport you can reach cheaply and at what hour.

Stansted and Luton both sit well outside central London, and early-morning departures can mean a very early start or an airport hotel. Check the actual departure time before you commit, because a 06:00 flight from Luton effectively rules out a same-morning train from most of the country. Late returns have the mirror problem, landing you back in the small hours with limited onward transport.

How long the flight takes

The outbound leg from London to Katowice runs roughly 2 hours 15 minutes, while the return is listed at about 2 hours 25 to 35 minutes. The difference comes from routings and winds rather than anything you can control, but it is worth knowing when you plan a tight connection at the UK end. These are typical figures rather than a timetable, and they shift with the season.

For a one- to four-day break, that flight time is short enough that a Friday evening departure and a Sunday return give you two usable days on the ground. Add a third night and you get a proper half-day on arrival plus two full days, which is the shape most people find comfortable for a short break in Katowice.

Indirect options: LOT via Warsaw from Heathrow

Heathrow has no direct Katowice service in the search results, so the fallback is LOT with a change at Warsaw Frederic Chopin. Recent momondo listings show total journeys of twelve hours and more in each direction, with fares well above the direct London options. That combination of a long layover and a higher price makes it a fallback rather than a first choice.

A connection is worth considering in a few narrow cases: if you are flying from a UK region that has a convenient LOT routing into Heathrow, if you want a single ticket protecting a missed connection, or if the direct fares spike around a busy weekend. Otherwise the direct two-hour flight from Stansted or Luton wins on both time and money.

Katowice Pyrzowice airport and where it sits

Katowice Pyrzowice is the airport serving the city, and despite the name it is not on the doorstep. It sits well outside the urban centre in the Silesian Voivodeship, so plan your first day around the transfer from arrivals rather than assuming you will be walking out into the old town.

Some travellers compare it with Kraków's airport as an alternative gateway, though Kraków is a different city and a separate trip. If your dates are flexible, compare the total cost of a Katowice landing plus transfer against a Kraków landing plus onward travel before booking either.

Arriving and getting into the centre before your first afternoon

For a short break the arrival time matters more than the fare difference of a few pounds. A morning landing gives you lunch in the centre and a full afternoon to walk the Katowice old town, while an evening arrival realistically gives you dinner and nothing else. If you are paying for two nights only, the earlier flight is usually the better value even at a higher headline price.

Settle your onward transfer from the airport before you fly, rather than working it out on arrival. A pre-arranged transfer or a planned route into the centre removes the guesswork at the end of a travel day and gets you there while the light is still good.

Choosing between a London departure and other UK airports

For most UK travellers the real choice is not Stansted versus Luton but whether the extra journey to either is worth avoiding a connection. From London and the south-east, Stansted and Luton are both straightforward, and the flight time means a long weekend is genuinely feasible. From further north or west, weigh the cost of a domestic flight or rail ticket against the cost of a single connecting ticket.

One practical point: a self-transfer on separate tickets carries real risk if the first leg is delayed, since neither airline will protect you. Where the price gap is small, a single itinerary or a night at the London end usually works out better than juggling two separate bookings on the same day.

Fares in context: what return prices have looked like

Return fares on the direct London route have moved around a great deal in recent search results, and the headline numbers you see rarely survive for long. In the deals shown on Skyscanner, low one-way fares from Katowice to London were quoted from about £12 in past listings, with the cheapest month flagged as December at the time of that search. Those are examples from an earlier pricing window, not bookable prices now.

Treat the cheapest figure as a floor rather than a forecast. In momondo's London to Katowice search results, direct return fares appeared around £47 to £52, while LOT connections via Warsaw showed closer to £178 in the same searches. Those are examples from one search window, not a fixed price. Baggage, seat selection and travel dates typically push the real total above the headline.

Should you book the direct flight or the connection?

Book the direct London flight. The Stansted and Luton routes are quick, reasonably frequent in recent listings and land you close enough to make a two-night break worthwhile. Only reach for the LOT connection via Warsaw if your starting point makes it unavoidable or the direct fares have jumped for your dates.

Once the flight is booked, spread your days across the Things to Do in Katowice highlights and the Katowice Old Town, add a half-day in Nikiszowiec, and leave room for a slow first afternoon after landing.
